On Nov. 18, feminist Gloria Steinem spoke to reporters in Washington about receiving the Medal of Freedom from Pres. Barack Obama. During her speech, she said her medal honors “the work of Margaret Sanger,” the woman who founded what became Planned Parenthood.
“I hope this is retroactive in honoring the work of Margaret Sanger,” Steinem said. “I hope that she would celebrate this recognition that reproductive freedom is a human right at least as crucial as freedom of speech and that no government should dictate whether or when we have children.”
Sanger is credited with founding the International Planned Parenthood Federation and the birth control pill in the 1950s. Today, Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the U.S.
