Lawmakers Emerge from Kerry Iran Briefing ‘Skeptical,’ ‘Unpersuaded’

The Obama administration’s success in persuading lawmakers to back its Iran diplomacy will be put to the test on Tuesday when the Senate Foreign Relations Committee marks up a bipartisan bill that would give Congress the right to review a nuclear agreement before it is implemented.

The administration has warned that the bill will undermine the framework nuclear agreement announced in Switzerland on April 2, which lays out the parameters for a final deal due to be concluded by the end of June.

Officials from Secretary of State John Kerry down have been lobbying hard – or in State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf’s words, have “done a robust amount of outreach” – ahead of the committee’s consideration of the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act.
