Poll: Romney Leads, Santorum Surges into Top 3

On the heels of the Iowa caucuses last week, Mitt Romney now leads the field of Republican presidential candidates. Newt Gingrich is in second place, and Rick Santorum has leapt into the top tier and is now right behind Gingrich in the latest CBS News national poll.

In the race for the nomination, 19 percent of Republican primary voters support Romney, followed by Gingrich with 15 percent, and Santorum right behind him with 14 percent. This is an increase of 11 points for Santorum since last month, but a five point decline for Gingrich.

Each of the candidates receives their support from different factions of the Republican Party. Romney’s core backing comes primarily from moderates, women and non-Tea Party supporters, while Santorum’s support comes from evangelicals and voters who are very conservative, the poll shows.

Gingrich seems to be losing some of his traction with Tea Party-supporters to Santorum – a social-values conservative from Pennsylvania.

While Santorum and Gingrich are now tied among Republican primary voters who support the Tea Party movement, Gingrich led this group by 16 points as recently as December. White evangelicals now seem to firmly back Santorum in this race.

Oh my goodness……………..wait until the Paulbots read this article……………the shrieking will be deafening!!

    • grandmasue says:

No shrieking, just pointing out that again Ron Paul isn't mentioned.
Also, I wonder since there are so many polls being reported… Why have I never been called to participate in one? Hmm…

    • Frank says:

The mass media continues to ignore/dismiss Ron Paul. Last NH poll I saw had him in 2nd place with 19% of the vote. He did pretty good in the last debates over the weekend. I'm always interested in reading reports from international viewers or web sites. They like Paul a lot and hope America wises up & starts to listen to him. They sense a coming financial crises & agree about the USA should return to the Founding Father's notion of non-intervention. Ron Paul's positions are on target on both counts. Don't just listen to the MSM. Do your own homework and make up your own mind on the issues. Most Americans sense we are on the wrong path & things are getting worse: so don't choose "more of the same" with big government politicians!

      • Looking4Sanity says:

So, instead of "more of the same", you're asking us to vote for "worse than normal" as embodied by Ron Paul? You make as much sense as he does! I know you'll take that as a compliment. More's the pity.

      • budman says:

        Frank:

I think you will see as we get down into the southern states that Paul will continue to fall in the polls. What happened in Iowa is totally different than what will happen in New Hampshire because you are looking at moderates and liberals much more so than conservatives. You will, oddly enough see Paul doing well. Why, because Ron Paul is not in any sense of the word a conservative regardless of the label they try to stick on him. If you listen to him, it is obvious he is as far left as Obama and in my opinion has some dangerous views. The voters in New Hampshire do not hold my Conservative views but they do analyze and vote for the candidate whose views are close to theirs and why Paul will do well there.
I see only two candidates being there toward the end and they are Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich and like Paul, neither is a true conservative; Romney is an obvious moderate and Gingrich swinging between both moderate and conservative depending on the subject.

        • Frank says:

I basically now look at 2 things in a candidate:
          1. Are they big government or small government?
          2. Do they support or ignore/trash the Constitution?
Ron Paul wins on both counts, even if you might not like his reasonable, non-interventionist foreign policy (which is what our Founding Fathers wanted & is why more US military support RP than all the rest combined).

Now compare the above 2 things to either Romney or Gingrich.

    • Jonathan Gartner says:

Get ready for thumbs down Paul is nuts always has been I have watched him for over 30 years some of his supporters are not much better and for you Paul bots unlike many of you I have served for over 25 years on the ground (unlike Paul who had warm food and a warm bed as a flight surgeon)

    • Looking4Sanity says:

Indeed. And it has not escaped my notice that 9/10ths of the attacks against Republican candidates have come directly from HIS camp.

The effect of this is going to be that it ensures a Mittens nomination. I'm not at all sure he could pull off a win against Obama. This entire process stinks of Ross Perot all over again.

      • Jonathan Gartner says:

His camp or sneaky ones from Romney and I agree the ghost of Ross seems to have come to life (we must preform an exorsisim(sorry about spelling))

      • budman says:

        Looking4Sanity:

Mitt could out debate Obama if he pounds Obama's record while in office. Gingrich would flat clobber Obama because he is far more intelligent and has more experience than Romney. Obama will attack both but the ammunition he will have will pale in comparison with what the Republican candidate can throw at him.
Everyone thinks Obama is highly intelligent. I don't find this to be the case and his is not a quick thinking person. Heck, I took the test to see if I was smarter than Obama that was on the internet and I scored higher than he did.
I have never been tested but I imagine my IQ to be only sightly above average so what does that say for the President? Was someone taking his tests for him in college?

        • Looking4Sanity says:

It really doesn't matter if he can "out-debate" Obama, and I do not share your optimism in that regard. All that matters is whether he can get more votes than Obama.

As far as I'm concerned, Romney is a proven loser. He lost to McCain in '08. McCain lost to Obama. Barring some monumental screw up by Obama, I just don't see Mittens getting the votes. They are too similar to warrant independents switching from one liberal to another.

  2. Rex L Fey says:

George W. Romney (Mitt’s father) was Mexican citizen, born at a Mormon Colony in Chihuahua, Mexico. There is no record I have found that George W. Romney became a U S citizen before Mitt’s birthday March 12, 1947.
Mitt is only a Naturalized Citizen not a Natural Born Citizen. Mitt was Born in Detroit, Michigan.
If Romney can not prove his father was a U S Citizen before his birth in 1947, it is absolutely clear that Mitt Romney is NOT a Natural Born Citizen eligible to be President.
Dems want Romney for the same reason they wanted McCain, to help protect Obama on his eligibility problem, Romney counting on this help.
    <RLF>

    • Frank says:

      You are incorrect.
"Romney was born to American parents in the Mormon colonies in Mexico; events during the Mexican Revolution forced his family to move back to the United States when he was a child."
So GW Romney would have been a considered DUAL citizen at birth (I lived in Mexico & know similar cases of US citizens giving birth to kids in Mexico) & he could have decided which citizen he wanted to be when he reached the appropriate age. By then, he was back in the USA apparently for good. So GW Romney was a US citizen when Mitt Romney was born in Detroit to two US citizens & Mitt would be a "natural born" US citizen.
I don't want Romney for POTUS, but I want to follow the Constitution.

    • Retha says:

George Romney was born in a Mexican community that at the time was American territory and still part of the U.S. George Romney's parents never gave up their U.S. citizenship. So you are way off base. You need to do proper research. The community at that time in Mexico was a Mormon community and it was not part of Mexico. Later the territory was given back to Mexico.

  3. Jonathan Gartner says:

I see Paul is finally getting what he deserves less of the vote. People are waking up that his reading of the Constitution would throw grandma under the bus (helping is not in the Constitution according to Uncle Ron). Obama is immoral period but, Paul is amoral and both paths led to the same place an that is not pretty. One wishes everything one wishes nothing both are equally as bad.

    • Frank says:

Come on! Ron Paul is a committed Christian, good father, good husband, consistent in his small government, Constitution & freedom-loving positions and in no way will "throw grandma under the bus" (a Democratic talking point). Read his positions on Medicare, Medicaid & Social Security. I intensely dislike Obama but I'm not sure he's any more immoral than others. He seems to come from a Muslim/Marxist/atheist/Black Liberation background. What a mess!

      • Frank says:

I should have posted "Christian Black Liberation church"

        • Jonathan Gartner says:

I did not say immoral I said amoral and Paul himself has said as much about throwing grandma under the bus. He reads the words of the Constitution but not the morals and ethics it imparts to make this nation great.

    • Dagny says:

By your comment, the socialist New World Order folks win and America loses. You should realize that by not supporting the Constitution in its entirety you are helping to shred it. But many uninformed folks such as yourself only like to give lip service to the Constitution because when you have the oppotunity to step up to the plate and vote for the only constitutionalist in modern history, you put forth such stupidity. The grassroots have lost their way, and the tea party's credibility is shattered if they support any other candidate other than Ron Paul because these candidates represent EVERYTHING corrupt that they have been fighting against for the past three years. It goes to prove that they are just as misinformed as the rest of Americans.

      • Jonathan Gartner says:

Lip service??? I also worked for Ronald Reagan whom Paul attacked for 8 years Ron Paul is a libertarian not a conservative Republican he is actually to the left of Obama in many things and by you Paul bots are just as bad as the Black Panthers running around in their ignorance. But go ahead like lemmings over the cliff with Paul

  4. El Loco says:

Ron Paul will not win the GOP nomination for pres. He will then run as an independent and, along with Trump and Johnson, siphon off just enough votes to ensure Odummy for another 4 years. Thanks a lot Ron! Maybe the leading Repub, candidate will offer him a high enough position in his cabinet to get him to support the party candidate. Let's hope so.

    • Jonathan Gartner says:

I agree a treasury appointment would be good for he US and him

    • grandmasue says:

While I would love to see Ron Paul as POTUS… I agree that the chances are slim to none. The establishment Republicans will not allow it to happen. I also doubt he would take a position in the cabinet of any of the current candidates , in the slim chance it was even offered. Paul has unwavering values and is not a sellout to the highest bidder like so many others!

      • Looking4Sanity says:

If, by "establishment Republicans" you mean "American voters", then you are correct. Paul just lost a full point in the polls to Santorum. The more Ron Paul speaks the less popular he becomes. His political demise is inevitable. Personally…I am very pleased with that knowledge. It can't happen soon enough to suit me.

        • Jonathan Gartner says:

The more he speaks in public the more of a loon he shows himself (along with general ignorance of foreign affairs)

    • Ann Wilson Kingsley says:

Vote for a Republican/Libertarian House, and retake the Senate to curb Obama. Then cast a principled Conservative vote for president. I will not vote for a Neo-Conservative Republican Obama. Those who do are not looking at the consequences: We will again lost the House and the Senate, and we will be back right where we have been. Work in your local and state races at the Grassroots level to elect candidates who are not Socialists. Put a Fiscal Conservative in the White House when the opportunity arises. Otherwise, just be honest about the field of candidates. My vote goes to Ron Paul, even if I have to write his name in on the ballot.

  5. Jerry F. says:

All the quote experts say Romney and Paul were the winners of the debates,I totally disagree,I think Gingrich was strong on every answer and Huntsman was good,I don't think the polls right now are telling the whole story,I think it will be closer then it shows, and I see Paul dropping.

    • Jonathan Gartner says:

He opened his mouth and people are finally listening to what exactly he is saying and they do not like it. Watch out for Paul-bots there are not many but they are vocal and just as irrational as their leader

      • Looking4Sanity says:

They are gumming up the works, for sure. It's Ross Perot all over again. I'm betting they are largely made up of the same stupid people too. You would think that no smarter than they are, that a sizable portion of them would have walked into wood chippers by now, or died while texting and driving or something.

  6. Dagny says:

These polls are soooo rigged it is pathetic. They really think people are stupid and will believe this. Please! Ron Paul is in second place leading big government Santorum and the Fabian socialist Gingrich. I wouldn't blame Ron Paul if he ran as a third party candidate because what they are openly doing is disgraceful! They are stealing this election away from Dr. Paul. They did it in Iowa, trucks with ballots disappeared, and they will do it in New Hamsphire where I hear it will be much easier to commit voter fraud. The GOP is just as corrupt as ACORN. No difference. VOTE RON PAUL 2012! THE DEFENDER OF THE CONSTITUTION.

    • NotTooOld1 says:

Ron Paul – defending the Constitution? Really? Tell me – where was Ron Paul over the last 30 years when our Congress became as corrupt as Nero's Senate? Where was he when the Supreme Ct was loaded up with Marxists and the Military was cut by 50%? Why does Ron think we should not have entered WWII, as the "Jews were not worth it"? Why does Ron think the Palestinians are right to take over Jeruselem — and why does Ron think that Osama Bin Laden attached the US "because we bombed them". Osama wrote to the world pre-9/11 that all Infidels must be enslaved or killed – those are the only choices allowed in the Quran. We've seen Ron before — last time around his name was Neville Chamberland- personnally, I'd like to avoid WWIII, not invite it by offering our neck to the Iran's of the world.

  7. Mike says:

    • evermyrtle says:

Don't feel badly, it happens to the best of us.!!! You just must speak their language, ours is not quite as good.

  9. Dagny says:

    I'll try this again,

These polls are rigged. They really think people are stupid. Ron Paul is in number 2 spot but the GOP is just as corrupt as ACORN. They stole the election away from Dr. Paul in Iowa, where trucks with ballots disappeared. They will do it again in New Hampshire where it is easier to steal an election. The system is corrupt. the GOP is corrupt. Dr. Ron Paul should run as a third party candidate because it is a disgrace how they are treating him. They already decided who the winner will be because they need to protect their cash cow and Dr. Ron Paul is owned by no one. We really do not have a choice here. This is just an illusion. VOTE RON PAUL! THE DEFENDER OF THE CONSTITUTION.

  10. tod says:

Dr.Ron Paul 2012 for the ONLY PROVEN HONEST(for Well Over 30 Years) Patriot running for President.PERIOD !!!

  11. Is Mitt Romney a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN? I mean, his family self-deported themselves to Mexico so they could enjoy many wives. Are we going through the same thing we had with Obama over dual citizenship? Can we count on Romney with immigration when he still has family in Mexico who can be ransomed for a Romney veto of immigration reform.

    • don't tread on me says:

romney is not the answer, he is larger government, a progressive and does not belive in closing the us border

  12. Talking about Ron Paul being an isolationist. Please compare America to Israel.

Any American citizen can freely travel to any part of Canada and feel perfectly safe. Millions of Americans visit Mexican border towns and resorts each year. Our trade between our neighbors is fantastic and we have great diplomatic relations. In the same vein, Canadians and Mexicans, even illegal Mexicans come to the US and feel safe and secure. Americans routinely marry with the citizens of these other two countries. America is one of the most open countries in the world, far from being isolationist.

    • How isolationist is Israel?

In real estate its location, location, location and one must accept their part in deciding where to live, so with that in mind, take a close look at Israel. Few Israelis would dare to venture to any of the dozen countries surrounding it for fear of their life. And Israel will not allow more than a token citizens of their countries into Israel. With the striking exception of that adulterer Anthony Wiener here in America, how many Jews in Israel marry with people from these other countries? There is no diplomatic relations. There is no cultural relations. There is no sporting relations. There is no trading relations. Israel is the poster boy for what an isolationist country is. But an American like Ron Paul is the one attacked for being isolationist by the Jewish lobby. Does not make any sense and hypocritical at best.

    • DON'T TREAD ON ME says:

WE NEED AN ISOLATIONIST THAT STOPS FOREIGN AID COMPLETELY AND WILL CUT THE BEEFITS TO THE US CONGRESS. BUILD AND ARM A STRONG MILITARY. MAYBE EVEN ONE THAT CAN READ THE US CONSTITUTION.
